Muskego Will Play For Its 5th Consecutive State Title
Muskego captain Sadie Mittelstaedt speaks on their win against Oregon in the state semifinal
The powerhouse of Muskego advanced to yet another WIAA D1 state final. After lifting the golden ball each of the past four seasons, they came into this tournament as a #3 seed, their lowest seed at state since 2019. They were tasked with taking on Oregon, who have made their first state tournament since making the jump to D1 last year.
This is not the first time we’ve seen this matchup this year. These two teams met back in April, where they came to a 2-2 draw. In that game, Muskego dominated the last 10 minutes of the matchup. Had that game been 90 minutes instead of 80, Muskego would have likely won.
Today, they didn’t wait until the final minutes to pull level. Senior midfielder Sadie Mittelstaedt rifled a shot that went bar-down and into the net in the 37th minute to give the Warriors a one goal lead. Just three minutes later, she struck again. Hitting a looping shot that flew over Oregon goalkeeper Reese McCabe to score Muskego their second goal right before halftime.
That second goal proved to be crucial. Oregon drove into the box and drew a foul, giving the Panthers a penalty kick and a chance to build momentum. Junior midfielder Kylie Steel was tasked with taking the kick, and she buried it right through Muskego goalkeeper Savannah Mittelstaedt.
Despite having built momentum and pressure, the comeback could not be completed. Muskego held onto their one goal lead to advance to the final, where they will face off against DSHA at 1:30pm on Saturday.
