Deforest Earn First Ever Girls State Tournament Appearance in Program History

The Deforest Norskies are headed to state after beating Edgewood 2-0 on Saturday in the sectional final. Their path to state was never going to be easy; As the #7 seed, the Norskies were underdogs from the very beginning of playoffs. After pulling off a huge upset victory of #2 seed Waukesha West, they defeated conference rival Monona Grove in a high scoring game. They were then tasked with taking down #5 seed Edgewood, and they did just that.

Here are the top moments from this sectional final.

In a game as important as this, it’s crucial to get off to a good start. Deforest had the start to the game that one could only dream of. In the first minute of the match, senior captain Marissa Titel opened the scoring for the Norskies with this shot from inside the box.

Just minutes later, the Norskies scored an extremely rare olimpico goal. Freshman Violet Colwin took the corner and put it on frame. With some help from the wind and a deflection off the Edgewood goalkeepers hand, Deforest found themselves up by 2 goals early into the match.

With sound defense throughout the rest of the match, Deforest were handed the plaque for winning the sectional final for the first time in program history.

A post-match interview with Deforest head coach Josh Howard.

The Norskies were given the #3 seed for D2 and are set to face #2 seed Wauwatosa East on Thursday at 1:30pm. Stay tuned for coverage of the Wisconsin high school girls soccer state tournament.
